The pivotal date set for this Sunday to begin withdrawing Palestinian weapons from the refugee camps in Beirut has proven to be little more than ink on paper.

The decision, it turns out, was a personal promise made by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and his son Yasser, without any prior coordination with Palestinian factions or even with Fatah’s leadership in Lebanon.

The disconnect became evident during a meeting of the Joint Action Committee held two days ago at the Palestinian Embassy in Beirut, which included representatives from various factions, notably Hamas. The meeting focused solely on the future of UNRWA’s programs, with no mention of weapons withdrawal dossier.

The omission triggered Abbas’s anger. Embassy officials received a strongly worded message from Ramallah, criticizing them for hosting a committee where Hamas holds significant influence.

In response, Abbas formed an eight-member committee headed by Azzam al-Ahmad to take charge of the disarmament file, officially relieving Yasser Abbas of any further role.

However, the newly appointed committee threatened embassy staff and some Fatah and PLO leaders in Lebanon, vowing to reopen files on alleged corruption across PLO institutions - from the embassy to the Palestinian Red Crescent, and sectors like relief, health, education, and social services.
